Needs Statement

Women represent a growing number of individuals living with HIV/AIDS in the United States. Recent studies indicate that HIV is increasingly affecting women, adolescents, and minorities in rural and Southern areas. Studies note the Deep South has specific barriers within the region, where stigma, gender disparities and limited resources are prevalent. Such figures and updates highlight the inadequacy of efforts to date and a need for additional focuses in these hardest hit areas. Challenges in availability and accessibility to resources, and quality health care and social services are issues to be explored and understood within a woman focused perspective. Healthcare agencies and diverse populations will benefit from this overview of women’s risks of HIV infection and acquisition. We will discuss gender-specific approaches and gender responsive programming within sexual and reproductive care and overall women’s wellness. Components of successful gender responsive programming from DHHS Office on Women’s Health projects will be discussed.

Target Audience

Designed to benefit those who are dedicated to bringing quality health care and health care services to this underserved and often under-represented portion of the rural population.

Objectives

1. Identify gender issues in HIV/AIDS
2. Identify best practices and strategies for integrating gender into HIV/AIDS programs
3. Develop and adapt ideas to apply to your own HIV/AIDS work
