Needs Statement

Project Access was created to increase access to comprehensive and coordinated healthcare services for children and youth with epilepsy residing in medically underserved and rural areas. Nine states are working to implement effective communication and outreach strategies to serve selected underserved populations. The Washington demonstration program is working with the Hispanic population in Yakima and Benton/Franklin Counties. This workshop presents some of the barriers confronted by rural and ethnic populations of Washington to access health services; addresses the importance of providing appropriate, culturally-linguistically competent and coordinated care for these populations; and explains practices and activities for outreach in rural areas. This workshop also discusses the importance of parents as leaders in the healthcare of their children, and demonstrates how the use of communication tools with and between families, school nurses, and healthcare providers can improve the quality of life of children with special needs.

Target Audience

Designed to benefit those who are dedicated to bringing quality healthcare and healthcare services to this underserved and often under-represented portion of the rural population.
