This eight-hour didactic and clinical course is designed to satisfy the Kentucky Board of Dentistry’s educational requirements for coronal polishing for qualified dental assistants. Successful completion of the classroom, lab and practice experience will qualify assistants to receive a certificate to polish coronal surfaces of teeth under a licensed dentist’s direct supervision KRS 313.045 (6). Lectures will cover the rationale for selective polishing, types of stains and deposits, and the selection of appropriate polishing agents.
The required eight hours may be met by attending either the all day didactic and hands-on session or completing the web-based course online and attending the afternoon hands-on session.
The online training program is an independent study course provided on the Internet and uses a format that allows the registrant to access the information, learn, and complete the didactic component of this course at his/her own pace.

Course Objectives
Upon completion of the program, participants should be able to:
• Demonstrate an understanding of ethical and legal issues related to coronal polishing and the role of all members of the dental team
• Demonstrate a basic understanding of some introductory dental assisting principles including infection control, dental anatomy, and ergonomics
• Describe and identify the equipment, materials, and supplies needed for coronal polishing
• Describe the potential risks and contraindications for coronal polishing
• Demonstrate the preferred technique for coronal polishing
• Describe the proper positioning used/ergonomics
• Demonstrate competency in performing coronal polishing in a preclinical setting
• Successfully complete the written examination for the course
Requirements
Participants must have written verification of one year of clinical experience within the last three years for taking this course. In addition, participants must read and study the manual and review the test questions in each section prior to the course date. In order to receive certification, participants must pass a multiple-choice examination at the end of the program (75% or higher) and successfully complete the pre-clinical and clinical requirements of the program. Participants must also provider successful verification of the clinical experiences documented at their own office. The dentist employer must submit verification of the clinical experiences documented at their own office. The dentist employer must submit verification to the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry that the assistant demonstrated clinical competency for a minimum number of experiences.

Live –interactive lecture, discussion, demonstration, and laboratory exercises using typodont- mounted models.

A refund, less a $25 processing fee, will be issued for all cancellations submitted in writing two weeks prior to the course date. A 50% refund less a $25 processing fee will be given for cancellations received in writing one week prior to the course date, with no refund thereafter. Refunds cannot be given for cancellations on or after the course starting date. Registrants may choose to receive a full tuition credit toward another course.
