Biosketch
Baretta Casey, M.D., M.P.H. graduated Cum Laude with a B.A. from Pikeville College, an M.D., from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine; and did graduate training at the Trover Clinic Family Medicine Residency Program, in Madisonville, KY. Dr. Casey has an M.P.H. with an emphasis on Health Systems Management from the University of Kentucky College of Public Health.
In October 2002, Dr. Casey joined the UK Department of Family and Community Medicine as professor and vice-chair of the East KY Campus and also served as the director of the East Kentucky Family Medicine Residency Program until February 2007. In November 2005, she became director of the UK Center for Excellence in Rural Health until July of 2010 and continues to serve as a Professor of the UK Department of Family and Community Medicine in Lexington, KY.
Dr. Casey had previously been in solo practice in Pikeville Kentucky. She is the founder of the Pike County Domestic Violence Board, Inc., and worked on developing the "Domestic Violence Shelter Safe Place" in Pike County. Dr. Casey served as a member on the Commonwealth of Kentucky, Governor's Task Force on Domestic Violence Crime, 1993-2000 and was a member of the Governor's Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Abuse, 2000-2002. In 2003, she implemented the Hazard Medical Education Foundation, Inc. Dr. Casey is actively involved and on numerous committees with the American Academy of Family Physicians, Kentucky Academy of Family Physicians, American Medical Association, Kentucky Medical Association, Pike County Medical Society and Perry County Medical Society. She holds leadership positions for the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, the National Residency Matching Program and the American Medical Association Council on Medical Education. In 2006, she was inducted as president of the Kentucky Medical Association and the following year in 2007, president of the Kentucky Academy of Family Physicians.
Dr. Casey has earned the AMA Physician Recognition Award several times and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. She has received numerous awards for academic medicine, community involvement and patient advocacy issues.
